Stretch Marks Gravidarum – Interview with Dr. Domingo Madera
In the 18th century, the medical community saw the need to agree and work in unison, grouped and protected by a new institution that would be at their service. At the request of the famous surgeon Antonio Gimbernat y Arbós, in 1780, King Carlos III ordered the creation of the Royal College of Surgery of San Carlos, as already existed in Cadiz and Barcelona.
In 1781 the architect Francisco Sabatini was commissioned to build it in the area between Antón Martín and Puerta de Atocha, where several hospitals were concentrated at the time: General Hospital, Amor de Dios Hospital and La Pasión Women’s Hospital. Initially, the Royal College was located in the basement of the General Hospital, where two infirmaries were set up for teaching.
However, this project never saw the light of day and it was not until May 12, 1831, when King Ferdinand VII granted the old Hospital de La Pasión to the new building, commissioned on this occasion to its main architect, Isidro González Velázquez, and whose works would last until 1840 (with the collaboration of the architect Tiburcio Pérez Cuervo).

Last December 17, the Congress of Deputies approved the first law regulating euthanasia by 198 votes in favor, 138 against (PP, Vox and UPN) and two abstentions. In the absence of ratification by the Senate, a procedure scheduled for February, the debate that the issue raised in the political sphere has spilled over into the healthcare professional sphere. The official medical associations of Madrid and Catalonia have spoken out, respectively, against and in favor of the regulation in a kind of war of communiqués. They only agree on the need to promote palliative care at the end of life.
The Consell de Col-legis de Metges replies with professional and ethical reasons to a ‘political’ communiqué from their colleaguesThe council stresses the need to preserve the physician’s freedom of conscience through mechanisms that guarantee the right to object, although it questions the creation of the registry of objecting healthcare professionals provided for in the Euthanasia Law. He argues that this registry would not reflect all possible situations (for example, a physician could object to the administration of a substance, but not to its prescription) and that without it “the effectiveness and quality of the act of aid in dying is equally guaranteed”.
